by Chandrakala Devi
The pivotal moment from the Ramayan — Prince Ram strings the legendary Shiva bow (Pinaka) at Sita's swayamvar while the assembled kings of the world watch in wonder and disbelief. Sita stands ready with the victory garland. The full royal court of King Janaka fills the canvas with ministers, sages, apsaras and common people straining to witness the miracle. On the left, the assembled kings who failed their attempts; on the right, Ram's teacher Vishwamitra blesses the moment. A narrative masterpiece executed on large Mithila paper with fine Kachni line work.
