The ten-armed goddess Durga in her triumphant aspect — Mahishasurmardini, the slayer of the buffalo demon. Each of her ten arms wields a divine weapon gifted by the gods: trident, sword, discus, bow, thunderbolt, lotus, conch, serpent-noose, club and fire. Her lion mount rears magnificently beneath her while Mahishasura falls defeated. Painted in bold vermillion and gold on deep ochre-washed paper, this work is especially powerful during Navratri.

About the Artist

Karuna Devi carries forward the legendary tradition of her mother Ganga Devi (1928–1991), who was one of the first Madhubani artists to gain international recognition. Karuna has preserved the Kachni line style in its purest form and teaches it to young women in Ranti village, Madhubani.
