by Sita Devi
The Kohbar painting is the most sacred of all Mithila art forms — traditionally painted on the wall of the wedding chamber on the night of a marriage. This work captures the central Kohbar design: a large lotus blossom surrounded by bamboo shoots (symbol of fast growth and fertility), fish pairs swimming in perfect harmony, the double triangle (Shiva-Shakti union) at the center. The seven layers of the composition represent the seven vows of Hindu marriage. The entire work radiates fertility, love and divine blessing for the new couple.
