by Karuna Devi
Eight identical sacred fish arranged in a perfect octagonal mandala formation — each fish's tail touching the next fish's head in an eternal circle with no beginning and no end, symbolizing abundance without limit. The fish are filled with the finest Kachni hatching while the background is dense with tiny lotus buds. The outer border carries the traditional double-fish (Mithuna Matsya) motif that has blessed weddings across Mithila for centuries. An endlessly joyful work that radiates prosperity.
About the Artist
Karuna Devi carries forward the legendary fish-and-aquatic tradition of her mother Ganga Devi (1928–1991), who was one of the first Madhubani artists to gain international recognition. Karuna has preserved the Kachni line style in its purest form.
